Runes are one of the most confusing systems for new Broken Blade players. A lot of people unlock their first rune and immediately expect it to work like a normal skill or ability. Then they start looking for a hotkey, can’t find one, and assume the rune is bugged.
The reality is that runes work completely differently from your weapon skills.
Instead of giving you a button to press, runes act as passive combat effects that automatically activate while fighting. Some runes summon allies, while others provide powerful combat bonuses that trigger on their own.
Understanding how runes work is important because some of the strongest end-game players consider them a major source of additional damage.
Broken Blade Runes Guide – How To Get Runes Fast
Runes are passive effects that activate automatically during combat.
Once equipped, they do not appear as extra skills on your hotbar.
Instead, the rune effect activates by itself whenever the required conditions are met.
You do not manually cast rune abilities.
Think of runes as combat assistants that help you while fighting bosses, farming enemies, or clearing difficult content.
Because they activate automatically, runes provide additional value without requiring any extra actions from the player.
Where to Get Runes
There are currently two main methods of obtaining runes.
Greedy Shop
The most reliable source of runes is the Greedy Shop.
This shop is located inside the Arena area.
To reach it:
- Travel to the portal area.
- Enter the Arena.
- Find the Greedy Shop.
- Spend Boss Coins on rune purchases.
The Greedy Shop contains several valuable items including:
- Runes
- Armor
- Materials
- Various progression resources
Most players obtain their first useful rune through this shop.
Dungeon Boss Drops
Runes can also drop directly from dungeon bosses.
To access dungeon content:
- Travel to Skyspire.
- Enter the dungeon.
- Progress through dungeon floors.
- Defeat dungeon bosses.
Rune drops are extremely rare, so don’t expect immediate results.
Most players will need multiple dungeon runs before seeing a valuable rune drop.
Critical Rune
The newest and most sought-after rune currently available is the Critical Rune.
This rune focuses on increasing critical damage and has quickly become one of the strongest options for damage-focused players.
Unlike common runes that provide smaller utility effects, Critical Rune directly contributes to your DPS output.
This makes it especially valuable for players farming bosses or attempting to maximize damage.
Critical Rune Drop Location
The Critical Rune can drop from the Layer 80 dungeon boss.
To obtain it:
- Travel to Skyspire.
- Enter the dungeon.
- Reach Floor 80.
- Defeat the boss.
- Hope for the rare rune drop.
The drop chance is very low, so expect a significant amount of farming.
Many players spend dozens of runs before obtaining one.
Shadow Clone Rune
If there is one rune that nearly every experienced player recommends, it is Shadow Clone.
The Shadow Clone Rune creates copies of your character during combat.
These clones appear automatically while fighting and assist you in battle.

What makes Shadow Clone so powerful is that it functions continuously throughout combat without requiring any manual activation.

Many high-level players spend hours farming Boss Coins specifically to purchase:

- Armor upgrades
- Valuable materials
- Other end-game resources
Fast Boss Coin Farming
One of the most efficient methods involves repeatedly farming summonable bosses.
Players commonly:
- Summon bosses.
- Defeat them quickly.
- Collect Boss Coins.
- Repeat the process.
This method becomes especially effective once your damage is high enough to defeat bosses rapidly.
A strong late-game build can generate Boss Coins much faster than dungeon farming alone.
Boss Keys

Best Rune for Beginners
For newer players, Shadow Clone is the ideal target.

Best End-Game Rune
