In this post, I’m taking a look at Mr. Catholic, based on Alexander Anderson from Hellsing, in All Star Tower Defense (ASTD). I’ll go through his stats, abilities, upgrades, attack animations, and how he performs in a real match.
Mr. Catholic has some pretty interesting features, especially his Purify effect and the Helena’s Nail ability. His damage is also quite high, so at first glance, he looks like a solid unit.
After testing him, though, I don’t think he’s a must-have. He’s decent if you have plenty of Gems to spend, but there are better options if you’re already using units such as Modica.
Mr. Catholic Stats
Mr. Catholic is a Level 1 unit with a Holy enchant and the Purify effect.
His starting stats are:
- Placement Cost: 733
- Damage: 4.66K
- Attack Speed: 3 seconds
- Range: 60
- Type: Ground
- Placements: 8
- Enchant: Holy
- Special Ability: Purify
He also has six categories:
- Anti-Hero
- Brutes
- Godlike Powers
- Prodigy
- Progressive
- Halfborn
His Leader Skill gives units with the White enchant a +15% Attack boost.
Mr. Catholic’s Purify Effect
Purify is one of the more important parts of Mr. Catholic’s kit.
The effect increases the damage taken by enemies by 12%. It also makes rewind enemies walk back faster for around 20/16 seconds, according to the showcase.
This gives Mr. Catholic some additional utility beyond simply dealing damage.
Mr. Catholic’s Special Ability
Mr. Catholic also has a special ability called Helena’s Nail.
The ability applies Judgment to all enemies within range.
Each tick of Judgment deals 7.7x Mr. Catholic’s damage, making this a pretty powerful effect once you actually unlock it.
One thing that initially confused me during the showcase was that Mr. Catholic doesn’t apply Judgment automatically with every normal attack.
Instead, Judgment comes from his ability, so you need to activate the ability to get that effect.
That’s worth knowing because simply placing the unit down won’t immediately give you the full Judgment effect.
First Attack and AoE
When you first place Mr. Catholic, he has 8 placements.
His starting attack is an AoE circle, and the early attack speed is pretty good.
He doesn’t have his Judgment effect on normal hits at this stage, but he does have the Purify utility.
The attack itself is fairly simple, so the real improvements come as you start purchasing his upgrades.
Exploding Chain Upgrade
The first group of upgrades gives Mr. Catholic several damage and stat increases:
- +1.75K damage
- +3.75K damage
- +7.5K damage
- Attack speed improved to 6
- Range increased to 80
- Exploding Chain
Exploding Chain changes his attack into an AoE cone.
The animation shows Mr. Catholic using what looks like a tornado-style attack. It’s a nice change from his original attack and gives him a different way of hitting enemies.
Die Kingdom Come Will Be Done
The next set of upgrades gives another series of stat increases:
- +13.5K damage
- +22.5K damage
- +32.5K damage
- Attack speed reduced to 4 seconds
- Range increased to 110
- Die Kingdom Come Will Be Done
His AoE changes back into a circle at this point.
The circle is decent and gives him solid coverage, although I wouldn’t say it’s particularly impressive compared with some of the larger AoE attacks available in ASTD.
The animation is also fairly similar to his previous attack. Rather than getting a completely new animation, it mostly feels like a faster version of what he was already doing.
Helena’s Nail Ability
Eventually, Mr. Catholic unlocks his main special ability, Helena’s Nail.
The ability:
- Applies Judgment to all enemies in range
- Deals 7.7x Mr. Catholic’s damage per tick
- Gives him additional utility on top of his regular attacks
The animation shows a burning-style attack before the Judgment effect is applied.
This is easily one of the more interesting parts of his kit, especially if you’re able to make good use of the Judgment damage.
