This is the real endgame rod of the Scoria Reach update — not the Daybreaker, not the event rods, but the one that basically forces you to interact with everything the island added. And honestly, it feels less like a simple unlock and more like a full questline layered on top of a grind layered on top of another grind.
Nothing about this rod happens quickly. Every step intentionally slows you down.
So here’s how the whole process actually works from start to finish.
Step 1 — Talk to the Scoria Guard (Unlock the Questline)
Everything begins at Scoria Reach with the Scoria Guard NPC.
When you first talk to him, he won’t give you anything immediately. Instead, he sets the main requirement:
You must complete 100% of the Scoria Reach Bestiary.
This alone is already a huge time investment because it means:
Catching every lava fish, all hidden species, mine-related catches, rare spawns, and even the secret-tier entries tied to specific conditions.
Most players hit around 80–90% relatively fast, then spend a long time chasing the last few rare entries.
Only after reaching full completion does the actual rod quest continue.
Step 2 — Obtain Three Special Fragments
Once your bestiary is fully complete, return to the Scoria Guard. He will now ask you to obtain three specific fragments:
Sulfur Fragment
Obsidian Fragment
Infernal Fragment
These are not caught through normal fishing.
You get them in the Scoria Mines by giving pearls to Craig Crabs. The crabs mine random materials, and eventually they will return with these fragments.
This part is mostly RNG — sometimes you get them quickly, sometimes you end up feeding dozens of pearls before the last one drops.
Step 3 — Complete the Crab Shrine (The Biggest Grind)
Before placing the fragments anywhere, you must activate the Crab Shrine.
This is easily the longest step of the entire process.
The shrine requires you to sacrifice every pearl type in the game, including both old and new Scoria pearls.
The list includes pearls like:
Ashy
Sulfur
Obsidian
Igneous
Gilded
Rose
Aurora
Deep Sea
Golden Sea
and several others
This means you have to go back and farm pearls across multiple regions, not just Scoria Reach.
Most players end up spending the majority of their time here because it’s pure collection grind.
Once all pearls are offered, the shrine activates and unlocks the next step.
Step 4 — Place the Three Fragments
Now you can finally use the fragments.
Each one must be placed at a specific location on Scoria Reach:
The Sulfur Fragment goes into a lava altar near the surface.
The Obsidian Fragment must be placed inside a cave on the side of the island.
The Infernal Fragment is placed at a higher volcanic altar above ground level.
Placing all three triggers the final unlock sequence.
Step 5 — Trigger the Secret Compartment
This part is very specific and easy to miss.
You must equip:
Scoria Armor
The Daybreaker Rod
Then enter the volcano where the Skeletal Leviathan spawns and fish once inside.
Doing this activates a hidden mechanism, opening a secret shop compartment.
Inside that compartment, you can finally purchase:
The Igneous Rupturer Rod
Step 6 — Unlock the Secret Skin
After buying the rod, return to the Scoria Guard one more time.
He rewards you with a secret cosmetic skin for the Igneous Rupturer.
This is purely visual, but it marks full completion of the entire questline.
Igneous Rupturer Rod Stats
This rod is designed to be an ultimate lava-zone rod rather than a general-purpose one.
Key stats include:
Lure Speed around 60%
Luck about 100%
Control around 0.3
Extremely high resilience (85%)
Infinite max weight
Small bonus to progress speed
It also has a special focus on hunting the Skeletal Leviathan.
Unique Ability — Igneous Mutation
The rod’s special mechanic is its mutation effect.
Occasionally, when catching fish, it triggers a molten eruption effect that brands the catch with an Igneous Mutation, significantly increasing its value.
The visual effect is dramatic — lava-like spikes erupt around the catch animation — making it one of the most visually distinct rod abilities in the game.
Finish the Scoria Reach bestiary completely. Talk to the guard to unlock fragment objectives. Mine sulfur, obsidian, and infernal fragments from crabs. Complete the Crab Shrine using all pearl types. Place the fragments at their altars. Equip Scoria Armor and the Daybreaker Rod, then fish inside the volcano. Access the secret shop to buy the Igneous Rupturer and return to the guard to receive its skin.
