Dead Rails Classes Tier List – Best Classes Ranked

Published 8 Aug 2026, 5:22 pm · 5 min read

Dead Rails has a huge selection of classes, and choosing the right one can make a major difference in how easily you survive, loot towns, and reach the final destination. Some classes are incredibly strong for solo runs, while others are mainly useful in specific team compositions or challenges.

This tier list ranks the classes from S Tier to F Tier based on overall usefulness, survivability, starting equipment, unique abilities, and how valuable they are during a typical run.

S Tier – Best Classes

These are the classes that provide the most value and are generally worth using whenever available.

• Conductor – One of the best budget classes. It starts with two coal and lets you get the train moving faster. At only 15 Bonds, it’s an excellent choice for beginners.

• Cowboy – Starts with a horse, saddle, revolver, and light ammo. The horse gives you excellent mobility and lets you outrun most enemies.

• Ghost – Extremely strong for survival. Enemies have a harder time detecting you, while bullets have a very high chance of dealing no damage. Its weakness against melee attacks is outweighed by its incredible survivability.

• Miner – Starts with a miner helmet, pickaxe, and two coal. The helmet is especially useful for finding clues, making this a great all-around class.

• Nun – One of the strongest overall choices and an excellent class for general gameplay.

• Tycoon – Gains buffs as you collect money, with the bonuses building toward a powerful late-game setup. It can become extremely strong during a run.

• Vampire – Comes with the Vampire Knife and provides strong damage and speed bonuses, although sunlight causes problems.

• Werewolf – Receives powerful bonuses at night, making it particularly effective during nighttime sections.

• Cursed – Starts with reduced health, damage, and speed, but gradually gains its buffs over time. It’s excellent for players who take a slower approach and allow the bonuses to build.

A Tier – Very Strong

These classes are highly useful but have more noticeable limitations than the S Tier choices.

• Horse – Gives you the ability to play as a horse and has some useful movement and looting tricks. Even without exploiting glitches, the mobility makes it a strong choice.

• Survivalist – Deals more damage as health gets lower. The old version had an even stronger starting damage bonus, but that bug was fixed. It’s still a powerful class for experienced players.

B Tier – Good Classes

These classes can be useful and are worth considering, especially for beginners or specific situations.

• Alien – Starts with a Gray Rifle and alien bodyguards. The bodyguards can distract enemies, but they aren’t particularly durable or damaging.

• Doctor – A good beginner-friendly support class that starts with bandages and Snake Oils. Its revive ability is particularly useful in multiplayer.

• Pyromaniac – Gives 50% more money from money bags, but also dramatically increases the chance of being struck by lightning. Getting a Lightning Rod can help offset the drawback.

C Tier – Situational

These classes aren’t terrible, but their benefits are fairly limited compared with stronger alternatives.

• Corrosionist – Starts with acid-related equipment and is immune to acid damage. It has some value when using the Old Faithful strategy but isn’t very versatile.

• Egg Stinger – Can hatch eggs that spawn enemies to help or distract you, but the long waiting period makes the class inconsistent.

• Frankenstein – Provides a free revive, but its overall usefulness is limited.

• Knight – Starts with basic armor and a sword, but these items are relatively easy to obtain elsewhere.

• Black Master – Starts with wolves that can distract enemies and potentially become allies. It’s useful for certain challenges but lacks general power.

D Tier – Weak

These classes have some useful mechanics but are generally outperformed by better options.

• Arsonist – Starts with Molotovs and fire immunity, but the Molotovs aren’t particularly powerful and fire immunity rarely matters.

• Demolitionist – Improves explosive damage and provides explosive resistance, but its starting equipment and specialized playstyle aren’t enough to compete with stronger classes.

• Hunter – Useful for completing the challenge involving werewolves, but has little value outside of that purpose.

• Ironclad – Starts with full armor but suffers from reduced movement speed. Armor can also be obtained elsewhere without the movement penalty.

• Krampus – Its ability to spawn Krampus after death can be interesting in multiplayer, but it isn’t particularly useful for standard solo runs.

• Milkman – Can become stronger with its milk mechanic, but without relying on glitches, it’s not especially impressive.

• Necromancer – Has a chance to turn defeated enemies into allies at the cost of health, but the mechanic isn’t reliable enough to make it a top-tier choice.

• Animal – Starts with defensive materials and armor, but its equipment is less useful after the zombie changes.

• Zombie – Has some stealth benefits, but its healing restrictions make it awkward to use. Ghost provides a much stronger alternative for a similar role.

F Tier – Avoid

These classes provide very little value compared with the alternatives.

• Elf – Its freezing abilities and aura aren’t enough to make it worthwhile, and the class is no longer obtainable.

• Musician – Can heal nearby teammates with the banjo but cannot heal itself, making it particularly weak for solo players.

• President – Can create soldiers after death, which can have some multiplayer potential, but it’s extremely poor for solo runs.

• Santa – Guarantees a Christmas biome with presents, but the overall benefit isn’t enough to justify using the class.

• Munitions Expert – Only provides a small amount of starting ammunition and doesn’t offer a meaningful unique advantage.
