The new Shady Bazaar questline in Fisch has been confusing a huge number of players because the required NPCs do not behave like normal quest characters. Instead of standing permanently in fixed locations, the Diver, Watchman, and Lantern Figure appear only during certain nighttime periods, and to make things even more annoying, only one of them can exist at a time.
When I first started this part of the quest, I genuinely thought my game had bugged because I spent ages searching around Moosewood without finding anybody. The update never clearly explains how the spawn system works, so most players end up running around randomly hoping one of the NPCs suddenly appears.
After finally figuring out the rotation system though, the whole process becomes much easier.
Moosewood At Night Is The Key
Everything connected to the Whisper Below The Gree quest happens during nighttime.
If players search during daytime, the special NPCs simply will not appear. Because of this, most experienced players are now using Sundial Totems repeatedly to skip straight into night instead of waiting naturally.
Honestly, this saves an incredible amount of time because the quest becomes painfully slow otherwise.
The moment nighttime starts, Moosewood changes quite a bit. Strange characters begin appearing around hidden corners of the island, and certain sections suddenly become much more important than they normally are during regular gameplay.
Diver Location Near The Pond
The Diver usually appears around the pond area on Moosewood.
Players should search carefully around the water and nearby shoreline because the NPC can blend into the darker nighttime environment surprisingly easily. The first time I finally spotted the Diver, I almost ran past the character completely because the lighting made the figure difficult to notice from far away.
The important thing to remember is that the Diver will not always be active every night.
If the pond area looks empty, it usually means one of the other special NPCs spawned somewhere else instead.
I found it much easier to slowly walk around the pond instead of sprinting through the area quickly because the character sometimes stands slightly off to the side.
Watchman Location Behind The Hill Area
The Watchman appears in a higher section of Moosewood behind the main fishing area.
To reach the correct location, players need to head behind the Angler NPC and continue walking uphill toward the elevated cliff section nearby.
This NPC honestly took me the longest to locate because the spawn area is farther away from the center of Moosewood than many people expect. A lot of players keep checking near the lighthouse repeatedly without realizing the Watchman appears closer to the hill paths instead.
During nighttime, continue checking behind Angler carefully because the Watchman can suddenly appear after being missing earlier in the same session.
The NPC seems tied to timed nighttime rotations rather than permanent placement.
Lantern Figure Location Near The Lighthouse
The Lantern Figure is normally found close to the lighthouse path.
Players should check the walkway and nearby area leading toward the lighthouse because the NPC usually stands around that section during active nighttime cycles.
Compared to the other two NPCs, the Lantern Figure is honestly easier to spot because the lighthouse area is more open and less cluttered visually.
This NPC is especially important because interacting with the figure rewards players with the Tarnished Lantern, which becomes part of the later Shady Bazaar progression.
If the figure is not standing there immediately, it most likely means either the Diver or Watchman is currently active instead.
The NPC Rotation System
The biggest reason this quest confuses players is the NPC rotation mechanic.
Only one special NPC can exist on the server at a time.
That means:
- Diver replaces the others
- Watchman replaces the others
- Lantern Figure replaces the others
Because of this, players will never find all three standing around simultaneously.
This mechanic honestly explains why so many people think the questline is broken during their first attempt.
When I initially searched Moosewood, I kept revisiting the same location repeatedly expecting permanent spawns, but the update intentionally rotates the characters separately during nighttime cycles.
Once you understand that system, the quest becomes far less frustrating.
Sundial Totems Speed Everything Up
If players want to finish the NPC search quickly, Sundial Totems are almost mandatory.
Instead of waiting through long daytime periods, players can skip directly into nighttime repeatedly and refresh the NPC rotations much faster.
Most people currently grinding the Shady Bazaar unlock are using Sundials nonstop because it dramatically reduces the waiting time between spawn cycles.
Honestly, without Sundials, this part of the update can feel much slower than it needs to be.
Fastest Search Method
After testing different routes myself, the easiest strategy ended up being rotating through all three NPC locations continuously during nighttime.
The path I used was:
- Pond area for Diver
- Hill behind Angler for Watchman
- Lighthouse path for Lantern Figure
Then I repeated the route again after refreshing nighttime.
This method works well because the locations are relatively close together, allowing players to confirm active NPC spawns quickly without wasting too much time wandering randomly around Moosewood.
Eventually every required NPC should appear naturally through the rotation system.
Tarnished Lantern Reward
One of the most important quest items tied to the investigation is the Tarnished Lantern.
The Lantern Figure eventually hands over this item during dialogue progression, and even though the game barely explains its purpose initially, the lantern becomes important later during the Shady Bazaar unlock sequence.
Players should make sure not to ignore the interaction because the lantern is required for future progression.
Common Mistakes During The Quest
A lot of players are making the same mistakes repeatedly while trying to complete this part of the update.
Searching During Daytime
The NPCs appear only at night.
Waiting In One Location
Since only one NPC spawns at a time, players should rotate between all three locations instead of camping one spot endlessly.
Assuming The Server Is Broken
Most “missing NPC” situations are simply caused by the rotation system working normally.
Ignoring Sundials
Skipping directly into nighttime speeds up progression dramatically.
NPC Spawn Summary
Diver
- Located near pond area
- Spawns during nighttime
- Usually near water sections
Watchman
- Located behind Angler
- Spawns uphill near cliff paths
- Appears during nighttime rotations
Lantern Figure
- Located near lighthouse path
- Gives Tarnished Lantern
- Appears during nighttime events
The Diver, Watchman, and Lantern Figure questline honestly feels much better once players understand how the nighttime rotation system works.
At first, the update can seem extremely confusing because the NPCs randomly disappear and never appear together, but the system actually makes more sense once you realize the game is intentionally treating the investigation like a mystery hunt around Moosewood.
After spending time searching properly, the fastest method ended up being repeatedly rotating between the pond, the hill behind Angler, and the lighthouse while constantly refreshing nighttime using Sundial Totems.
Once players start doing that consistently, the Shady Bazaar investigation becomes much smoother and far less frustrating overall.
