Haze Seas Shanks Update Guide – Gryphon, Black Leg V2

The latest Haze Seas update brings a pretty big batch of new content to Third Sea. The main attraction is the new Red Hair Shanks boss, but there’s much more to chase, including the Gryphon weapon, Emperor Cape, Black Leg V2, and the new Ghost Ship sea event.

There are also a few requirements that aren’t immediately obvious. Shanks runs on a server timer, Black Leg V2 requires materials from the Ghost Ship, and spawning that ship requires sacrificing fruits.

If you’re trying to work through everything in the update, here’s how it all fits together.

Red Hair Shanks is a new boss found in the Third Sea, and unlike bosses you can summon whenever you want, Shanks uses a server-wide spawn timer.

By default, Shanks spawns every four hours in the Throne Room.

However, you don’t necessarily have to wait the entire four hours. Defeating Super Bosses around the world reduces the timer by 10 minutes per Super Boss.

There is a limit to this mechanic: the spawn timer can only be reduced by a maximum of two hours.

You can check the remaining time directly inside the Throne Room, so it’s worth visiting before you start grinding bosses.

When Shanks is about to appear, you’ll know immediately. The area becomes covered in fog, the sky turns blood red, and you’ll receive the message:

“The sea trembles, a king approaches.”

That’s your signal that the Shanks fight is starting.

Shanks’ Throne Room is located around the Land of Gods in Third Sea.

Start from the bridge at Land of Gods and head toward the large castle. Enter the castle and continue inside until you reach the Throne Room.

You’ll find the boss spawn location here along with the timer showing how long remains until Shanks’ next appearance.

Don’t underestimate this fight.

Shanks has around 600,000 HP, and the encounter also includes a second stage. That makes the battle considerably longer than it initially appears.

A strong build should be able to handle him, but fighting Shanks solo can take quite a while. Bringing other players should make farming him much more manageable, especially if you’re planning to repeat the fight for his rare drops.

Defeating Shanks gives you a chance to obtain some of the update’s most interesting rewards.

The showcased drop pool includes:

• Gryphon – 2.5% drop chance

• Emperor Cape – 5% drop chance

• 2 Blade Fragments

• Dominion Over Red title

The Gryphon is particularly rare at only a 2.5% chance, so don’t expect it to drop on your first clear.

The new Gryphon sword is obtained as a rare drop from Shanks.

You have approximately a 2.5% chance of receiving Gryphon whenever you successfully defeat him.

That means you may need to farm multiple Shanks spawns before getting the weapon.

Gryphon comes with three showcased abilities:

Crimson Barrage unleashes a fast offensive attack in front of your character. It’s the first of Gryphon’s three abilities and appears designed for quickly pressuring an enemy.

Death Cross is another extremely quick attack, making it useful when you don’t want to leave a large opening during combat.

Vanquishing Tornado creates a much larger tornado-style attack and is easily one of Gryphon’s flashier moves.

Between its rarity and moveset, Gryphon is likely going to be one of the main items players farm Shanks for.

The Emperor Cape is Shanks’ other major exclusive reward.

It has approximately a 5% drop chance, making it twice as likely to drop as Gryphon, although you’ll probably still need several clears depending on your luck.

Simply continue defeating Shanks whenever he appears until the cape drops.

The update also introduces Black Leg V2, an upgraded version of the existing Black Leg combat style.

Before you can obtain it, you’ll need:

Black Leg V1 at 300 Mastery 2 Phantom Lanterns 5,000,000 currency

Once you’ve reached 300 Mastery with Black Leg V1, head over to the Stage of Combat.

Interact there to check the upgrade requirements. Once you have the two Phantom Lanterns and 5 million required for the upgrade, you can unlock Black Leg V2.

The Phantom Lantern requirement is where the new Ghost Ship event becomes important.

Upgrading gives Black Leg a completely new set of attacks.

Demonic Crash is an extremely quick attack that lets you immediately slam into your target.

Tempest Whirlwind is a holdable ability. Holding the attack extends the move rather than forcing you into one short animation.

Stampede unleashes a rapid barrage of kicks. It’s another very fast ability and fits the aggressive close-range playstyle of Black Leg.

Azure Inferno activates blue flames around the fighting style and changes the appearance of your attacks.

Black Leg V2 also scales from your combat damage, so keep that in mind when putting together a build around it.

The Ghost Ship is another major part of this Haze Seas update, and you’ll need to farm it if you want Black Leg V2.

Head to the Land of Gods and travel toward the left side of the area. Look for a green altar.

When the event is available, you should see the message:

“A vicious storm has taken over the sea.”

The altar allows you to sacrifice fruits to summon the Ghost Ship.

However, you can’t simply hand over any single fruit. You need to contribute 20 points worth of fruits.

Different fruit rarities contribute different numbers of points:

You need 20 total points.

Because a Mythic fruit is worth exactly 20 points, sacrificing one will immediately fulfill the requirement. You can also combine lower-rarity fruits until you reach the required total.

After making the sacrifice, the message:

“A phantom ship rises from the abyss.”

will appear.

Look out toward the sea from the Land of Gods and you should be able to spot the newly spawned Ghost Ship.

You’ll need to defeat the ship itself to receive its rewards.

The showcased rewards include a guaranteed Phantom Lantern, which is especially important because Black Leg V2 requires two of them.

Other listed rewards include:

Phantom Lantern – 100% drop Blade Fragment Ghostly Haki – 10% chance 5 Race Spins – 10% chance

The Ghost Ship also awards a substantial amount of XP upon completion.

Because two Phantom Lanterns are needed for Black Leg V2 and the lantern is shown as a guaranteed Ghost Ship reward, you’ll need to complete the Ghost Ship event at least twice to collect the required amount.
