How to Get Runes in Mine a Mountain – Boulder Radar Guide

Runes are one of those things in Mine a Mountain that you might completely ignore at first, then suddenly realize how useful they are once you start pushing further into the mountain. They can give you buffs for things you’re already doing constantly—mining faster, improving your luck, getting more out of gems, and even increasing your bomb radius.

The problem isn’t really using Runes. It’s finding enough of them.

Runes mainly come from Boulders hidden inside the mountain, and if you’ve ever tried finding those by randomly digging around, you already know how annoying that can get. Thankfully, the newer Boulder Radar makes the whole process much easier.

I’ve broken down how to find Boulders, how the radar works, why you shouldn’t immediately destroy every Boulder you discover, and how your pickaxe affects the Runes you can farm.

The main way to get Runes is by finding and destroying Boulders inside the mountain.

When you break a Boulder, it can drop Gems along with multiple Runes that you can collect.

The basic farming loop looks like this:

• Get a Boulder Radar if possible.

• Enter the mountain.

• Activate the radar.

• Look for highlighted Boulders.

• Mine tunnels toward each Boulder.

• Expose as many Boulders as possible before the radar expires.

• Return to the Boulders and break them.

• Collect the dropped Runes.

You technically don’t need a radar to do this. Boulders can still be discovered through normal mining.

The radar simply removes a lot of the guessing.

Runes provide special buffs that improve different parts of your mining setup.

Some of the Rune effects include:

• Haste

• Luck

• Fortune

• Increased Gem Size

• Increased Bomb Radius

Different Runes are useful for different setups, so you’ll eventually want to collect more than just one type.

Luck and Fortune are particularly nice when you’re farming rewards, while mining-related buffs can make future trips through the mountain noticeably smoother.

You can also get several different Rune types from a good Boulder, so farming them isn’t necessarily about hunting one specific Rune every time.

Boulders are hidden throughout the interior of the mountain.

Without any assistance, your only real option is to mine through the mountain and hope you eventually uncover one.

It works, but it’s not exactly efficient.

You can spend a lot of time digging in completely the wrong direction without realizing a Boulder is sitting somewhere else nearby.

That’s why I’d recommend getting the Boulder Radar as soon as you have access to one.

Go to the Radar NPC and interact with them.

Scroll through the available radar options until you find:

Boulder Radar

The Boulder Radar highlights Boulders hidden within the mountain, allowing you to see where you should be digging instead of blindly carving tunnels everywhere.

There is a catch, though.

The Boulder Radar won’t necessarily always be available because the shop uses a stock system.

If you see it in stock, it’s worth grabbing.

If it isn’t there, you can either wait/check again or continue finding Boulders through normal mining.

There’s an important distinction here if you’re considering spending Robux.

Instead of paying a huge amount for a single radar directly, it may be cheaper to refresh the Radar Shop until Boulder Radar appears in stock.

The direct purchase shown costs around 1,000 Robux for one radar, which is pretty steep for a consumable item.

Shop refreshing can potentially be much cheaper because Boulder Radars may appear in larger quantities when they enter normal stock.

Of course, shop refreshes still involve RNG, so there’s no guarantee you’ll get one within a specific number of refreshes.

Personally, I wouldn’t dump 1,000 Robux into a single radar unless you’re completely fine with the price. The radar is useful, but you can still find Boulders without it.

Once activated, Boulder Radar temporarily reveals Boulders hidden around the mountain.

In the showcased run, the radar provided roughly a minute and a half of detection time.

During that window, highlighted Boulders can be seen through the surrounding terrain.

Even better, the radar also helps you identify the rarity of the Boulder you’re tracking.

That means you don’t have to waste your entire radar duration digging toward the first Common Boulder you see if there’s something much better nearby.

But there’s a trick that makes each radar use much more valuable.

This is probably the best tip for farming Runes efficiently.

When your Boulder Radar is active, don’t stop and fully destroy every Boulder you find.

You’re wasting valuable radar time.

Instead, mine toward the highlighted Boulder until you’ve exposed it.

Then leave it there.

Immediately start looking for another highlighted Boulder and dig toward that one as well.

Keep repeating the process until your radar timer is almost finished.

Once the radar expires, go back through the tunnels you’ve already created and destroy all the Boulders you exposed.

You’re essentially using the radar for what actually matters—locating Boulders—rather than spending half of its duration breaking and collecting loot.

For example, if you locate four Boulders during one radar activation, expose all four first. Once the timer ends, you can take as long as you want breaking them afterward.

It makes a surprisingly big difference.

Not every Boulder gives you the same amount or quality of loot.

You’ll come across different Boulder rarities while mining, including things such as:

Common → Uncommon → Rare → Epic → higher-tier Boulders

The better the Boulder, the better your potential Rune haul.

A Common Boulder can still drop multiple Runes, so don’t completely ignore them if they’re easy to reach. But once you start finding Rare and Epic Boulders, the difference becomes much more noticeable.

During testing, a Rare Boulder produced considerably more Runes than a nearby lower-rarity Boulder.

Higher-quality Boulders can also give you a better variety of Rune drops.

This is the main reason you eventually want to hunt higher-rarity Boulders instead of farming Commons forever.

Better Boulders can provide:

More Runes + Better Runes

A single strong Boulder can leave quite a pile of Runes behind once it breaks.

The showcased Rare Boulder, for example, dropped several different types, including things such as Luck, Fortune, and Storm Runes.

Meanwhile, some lower-rarity Boulders produced noticeably fewer Rune drops.

So once your equipment is strong enough, prioritize the better highlighted Boulders whenever your radar reveals them.

Here’s where progression becomes important.

Finding a high-rarity Boulder doesn’t automatically mean you can break it.

Certain Boulders have pickaxe requirements, and if your mining tool isn’t strong enough, you’re going to have to leave that Boulder sitting there until you upgrade.

One example shown was a Nocturnite Boulder.

Despite successfully finding it with the radar, it couldn’t be mined because it required the Tremendous Pickaxe, described as the best pickaxe needed for that particular Boulder.

That’s painful when you’ve just spent time digging toward it, but it’s also a good reason to keep upgrading your mining equipment.

Better pickaxes aren’t only about mining blocks faster—they effectively give you access to higher-tier Boulder rewards.

If you already have one available, using a Luck Totem before starting your Boulder farming run can be worthwhile.

The idea is simple: activate the Luck Totem before hunting Boulders so you have additional luck working in your favor during the farming session.

I wouldn’t say you need to stop farming Runes just because you don’t have a Luck Totem, though.

Think of it as an extra boost rather than a requirement.

Your priorities should still be getting a Boulder Radar, finding better Boulders, and having a pickaxe capable of actually breaking them.

You might assume climbing as high as possible before activating the radar guarantees better results.

That doesn’t always seem to be the case.

During one attempt, activating the radar around the Legendary Zone initially revealed almost nothing nearby. Most of the detected Boulders ended up being farther down the mountain.

Later attempts near the lower areas produced additional targets.

This seems to vary depending on the mountain and where Boulders have generated, so I wouldn’t automatically burn your radar at the very top.

If you’re getting almost no highlights, move through different sections of the mountain while the effect is active.

And remember that some mountains may simply have better Boulder layouts than others.

After seeing how the radar works, I’d use every charge with one goal: find as many Boulders as possible before the timer disappears.

Activate your radar somewhere you can move around quickly.

As soon as you see a highlight, check its rarity and start digging toward it. Stop once the Boulder is exposed.

Then move.

Don’t collect anything. Don’t sit there breaking the Boulder. Don’t reorganize your inventory.

Find the next highlight.

If another Boulder appears nearby, expose that one too. Keep repeating this until the timer reaches its final few seconds.

Once the radar effect disappears, you’ve already done the hard part. Now you can calmly revisit each tunnel, break every Boulder, and collect all the Runes and Gems.

That way, one radar use can potentially lead you to several Boulders instead of just one or two.

Don’t worry—you aren’t locked out of Rune farming.

Boulders still exist normally inside the mountain.

You’ll simply have to find them by mining and exploring manually.

Obviously, this is much slower because you have no indication of where they’re located.

If you’re already doing a long mining session, though, there’s always a chance you’ll naturally run into Boulders along the way.

When the Boulder Radar returns to stock, grab a few if you have the resources. Having multiple uses saved up makes dedicated Rune farming sessions much easier.

Once you’ve finished smashing Boulders and collecting everything, take your Runes back to your Pod.

This is where you can place your collected Runes and start taking advantage of their effects.

You’ll probably end up with quite a few different Runes after several Boulder runs, especially once you’re able to consistently break Rare and higher-quality Boulders.

Rather than thinking about Runes as one-off loot, treat them as another part of improving your overall mining setup.

Better Runes help your build, which makes future farming easier, which helps you reach even better rewards.

If you’re specifically grinding Runes rather than casually collecting them, this is the route I’d follow:

Boulder Radar → Activate Luck Totem → Find multiple Boulders → Expose them without breaking → Prioritize Rare/Epic Boulders → Wait for radar to expire → Break everything → Collect Runes → Repeat

The biggest improvement you can make is simply not wasting your radar timer.

If you’re standing around collecting Gems while 60 seconds of Boulder detection is ticking away, you’re losing opportunities to locate more Boulders.

Mark first.

Loot later.

Once I started looking at the radar that way, the farming method made much more sense.

Find and destroy Boulders hidden inside the mountain. Breaking Boulders drops Gems and Runes.

Use the Boulder Radar purchased from the Radar NPC. It temporarily highlights hidden Boulders so you know where to dig.

Yes. Boulder Radar isn’t required. You can discover Boulders naturally while mining, but finding them is considerably more difficult.

Yes. Higher-quality Boulders generally provide more and better Rune rewards than lower-rarity ones.

Rune effects include bonuses such as Haste, Luck, Fortune, increased Gem Size, and increased Bomb Radius. Other Rune types such as Storm can also appear among Boulder drops.

Some higher-tier Boulders require stronger mining equipment. If you can’t damage one, check its tool requirement and upgrade your pickaxe.

After collecting Runes, return to your Pod and place them there to use their bonuses.
