Practical Basketball Controls Guide (PC & Controller)

Published 1 Aug 2026, 4:39 am · 5 min read

If you’re just getting started in Practical Basketball on Roblox, the number of controls can be a little intimidating. Between shooting, dribbling, post moves, dunks, and flashy combos, it’s easy to forget which key does what during an actual game.

The good news is that you don’t need to master everything on day one. Once you learn the core controls—movement, shooting, passing, and a few dribble moves—you’ll already be much more effective on the court. From there, you can slowly add advanced mechanics like post play and explosive dribble combos.

This guide covers the most important controls for PC and Controller so you can jump into matches with confidence.

Basic Movement Controls

Before learning any advanced moves, you’ll want to get comfortable with moving around the court.

Sprint

PC: Hold Shift

Sprint is one of the most important mechanics in Practical Basketball. You’ll use it for:

• Driving toward the basket

• Fast breaks

• Chasing defenders

• Creating space

• Setting up dunks and layups

Without sprinting, your offensive game becomes much easier to defend.

Shooting Controls

Regular Shot

PC: Hold Space

A shot meter appears while you’re shooting.

Try to release the button when the meter reaches the green zone. Better timing greatly increases your chances of making the basket.

Instead of rushing every shot, watch the meter carefully until the timing becomes second nature.

Dunk Controls

Nothing feels better than throwing down a dunk after beating your defender.

Regular Dunk

To perform a normal dunk:

• Hold Shift to sprint.

• Drive toward the basket.

• Hold Space to jump.

• Release at the correct timing.

Timing matters here just as much as positioning.

Lob Dunk

Lob dunks are a little more advanced.

To perform one:

• Sprint toward the basket.

• Press Space + F together.

• Release with proper timing inside the green area.

Because this move relies on timing, don’t expect to land every attempt immediately. A little practice goes a long way.

Jelly Layup

If you’re too far for a dunk but close enough to finish, a jelly layup is another option.

To perform it:

• Drive toward the basket.

• Finish using C instead of F.

Jelly layups are useful when defenders are contesting near the rim and a dunk isn’t available.

Dribbling Controls

Good ball handling separates average players from great ones.

Here are the main dribble controls on PC.

Switch Ball Hands

• C → Move the ball into your right hand.

• Z → Move the ball back into your left hand.

These simple hand switches help you protect the ball while setting up other moves.

Step Back

Press:

A step back creates extra shooting space between you and your defender.

Double Step Back

Quickly press:

• X twice

This creates even more separation than a normal step back and is especially useful against aggressive defenders.

Spin (Juke)

Press:

Your player performs a quick spin or juke move.

This works well when defenders are expecting you to continue driving in one direction.

Sham Move

Double tap:

This activates the Sham move, giving you another way to fake out defenders.

Backward Hand Switch

Press:

• C + X

This changes ball hands while moving backward.

It’s a useful move for resetting your offense without completely stopping.

Full 360 Spin

Perform the following sequence:

• C → X → Z

Your player performs a complete spin move.

While flashy, it’s most effective when used sparingly instead of every possession.

Quick Hand Switch

Press:

This quickly transfers the ball between hands.

It’s a simple move, but it keeps defenders guessing.

Slow Spin

Press:

Unlike the faster spin, this move is slower and can be mixed into different dribble combinations.

Changing your dribble speed is often just as important as changing direction.

Passing Controls

Passing wins games.

Even if you’re an excellent scorer, knowing when to pass makes your team much harder to defend.

Regular Pass

PC:

A simple pass to your teammate.

Lob Pass

To throw an alley-oop pass:

• Press F

• Then press the number assigned to the teammate you want to pass to

This allows you to target a specific teammate for aerial finishes.

Self Lob

Although it isn’t listed in the standard control menu, you can perform a self lob by pressing:

This move is often used for creative finishes near the basket.

Post Move Controls

Post play becomes important whenever you’re backing down defenders near the basket.

Enter Post Position

Hold:

Your player enters a post-up stance.

Release G whenever you want to leave the post position.

Spin Left from the Post

• Release G

• Hold A

Your player spins toward one side.

Spin Right from the Post

• Release G

• Hold D

This performs the opposite spin move.

Learning both directions helps you react to whichever side the defender commits to.

Controller Controls

Controller players have access to the same core mechanics, but the button combinations are different.

These include:

• Sprinting

• Shooting

• Passing

• Dunks

• Post moves

• Dribble moves

• Escape moves

• Explosive dribble moves

• Triple-threat moves

Many advanced dribble mechanics also use the right analog stick, allowing controller players to perform crossovers, escapes, hesitations, and other advanced moves smoothly.

If you’re using an Xbox or PlayStation controller, spending a few minutes in practice mode is the fastest way to become comfortable with the different button layouts.

Best Controls to Learn First

Trying to memorize every control at once usually leads to frustration.

Instead, focus on these first:

• Sprint (Shift)

• Regular Shot (Space)

• Regular Pass (R)

• Hand Switches (Z and C)

• Step Back (X)

Once those feel natural, move on to:

• Dunks

• Lob finishes

• Spin moves

• Post controls

• Advanced dribble combinations

Building your skills gradually is much easier than trying to learn everything in a single session.

Practical Basketball offers a surprisingly deep control system, giving players plenty of ways to score, create space, and outplay defenders. While the list of controls may seem long at first, most gameplay revolves around a handful of core mechanics like sprinting, shooting, passing, and basic dribbling.

After you’ve mastered those fundamentals, you can start adding spins, post moves, explosive dribbles, and advanced combos to your game. Before long, the controls will become muscle memory, allowing you to focus less on your keyboard or controller and more on making the right play on the court.
