If you’ve jumped into The Portal expecting one of those Roblox RPGs where you destroy a few enemies, gain ten levels, grab an overpowered weapon, and suddenly you’re ready for endgame… yeah, this game is going to humble you pretty quickly.

The Portal is a slow-paced MMORPG. Progress actually takes time here. Your race matters, your class matters, your stats matter, and even things like achievements can contribute toward making your character stronger.

The beginning can also be a little confusing. You’re immediately presented with choices involving Milk, Meat, and Mushroom, then you have races, rare race variants, classes, job changes, stats, Combat Points, and a bunch of other systems competing for your attention.

So rather than throwing everything at you at once, I’m going to walk through what actually matters when you’re starting out: codes, races, classes, race/class combinations, early progression, money, rerolls, achievements, and some mistakes you really don’t want to make.

One thing I’d say before anything else: don’t skip the tutorial on your first character. The Portal isn’t particularly forgiving when you don’t understand its systems, and rushing is usually what gets new players stuck.

Before choosing your long-term build or doing much grinding, redeem the available codes.

This is especially useful for a new account because codes can provide things such as Race Rerolls and Job Changes, potentially saving you a fair bit of grinding later.

The exact reward attached to each code isn’t clearly specified in the source, so I wouldn’t want to invent rewards just to fill the table. What matters is that these codes can provide progression-related items, including reroll/job-change resources.

Since Roblox codes can expire, redeem them as early as possible.

The code menu isn’t particularly difficult to find once you know where you’re looking.

Open Settings from the menu on the right side of your screen and find the Codes option.

Then:

• Open Settings.

• Select Codes.

• Enter a working code.

• Confirm/redeem it.

• Repeat for the remaining codes.

I’d do this before spending any valuable reroll resources. If the codes give you something useful for changing your race or job, you’ll have more freedom when putting your build together.

The first race selection is one of the weirdest parts for a new player because the game doesn’t simply hand you a normal character creation menu.

Instead, you’re basically a baby choosing between:

Milk, Meat, or Mushroom.

Each choice corresponds to a different racial path.

These aren’t merely cosmetic choices.

Each racial family has different possible variants, and some of the rarer variants provide stat advantages that naturally work better with particular classes.

That means you should already have a rough idea of the class/build you want before settling on a race.

For players who just want the quick answer, these are the combinations I’d look at first:

There is some flexibility here. You don’t have to use the mathematically perfect race for every class to play the game.

But if you’re spending rerolls and trying to optimize from the beginning, matching racial bonuses with your class’s important stats makes much more sense.

Let’s break down why.

Warrior is your physical damage-oriented option.

The class focuses heavily on dealing physical damage while maintaining a reasonable balance between physical and magical defenses. Its downside is comparatively lower HP, so you’re not supposed to treat Warrior like a pure tank.

Your main priorities are:

Strength Dexterity

Your secondary priorities are:

Vitality Agility

Strength is the obvious fit for your physical damage, while Dexterity is another major component of the Warrior setup.

Vitality and Agility can then help round out the character rather than dumping absolutely everything into offense.

Warrior’s listed mastery/passive options include:

Sword Mastery Dagger Mastery

Its active abilities include:

Blade Fury Battle Cry Bash Blade Circle

If you like being directly involved in fights rather than standing behind your party casting spells, Warrior is probably the easiest class fantasy to understand.

Human is recommended for Warrior, although Beastman—particularly its more Dexterity/Agility-oriented variants—also has some nice synergy with physical builds.

The Beastman Fox is particularly interesting because of its additional Agility and Dexterity.

So I wouldn’t automatically dismiss Beastman if you’re planning a Warrior.

Defender is pretty much what the name suggests: your tankier physical frontline class.

Its physical damage is lower than Warrior, but you gain much better physical defense and HP.

The trade-off is weaker magic defense.

Focus on:

Vitality Strength Wisdom

Vitality is especially important because Defender is supposed to survive punishment rather than simply race another player or enemy to zero HP.

The Defender kit includes mastery/passive options such as:

Sword Mastery Blood Mastery

Its active abilities include:

Whirlwind Iron War Bash Timber Charge

If you normally enjoy tank characters in MMORPGs, this is the direction I’d start with.

The particularly interesting combination here is:

Corrupted Human + Defender

Corrupted Human receives bonuses to Strength and Vitality, which are exactly the sorts of stats a Defender wants.

If you manage to roll Corrupted Human and you’re interested in tanking, I’d seriously consider keeping it rather than immediately burning a reroll.

Enchanter takes you away from physical builds and into heavy magical damage.

Its strengths are:

High magic damage Normal magic defense

Its weaknesses are:

Low HP Low physical defense

In other words, you can hit hard with magic, but you don’t want enemies freely beating on you.

Prioritize:

Intelligence Dexterity

Then use:

Vitality

as your secondary stat.

The Enchanter kit includes Staff Mastery, alongside abilities such as:

Entangle Enchant Weapon Meteor Shower Sacrifice Mana Shield

Meteor Shower alone should tell you what kind of playstyle we’re dealing with here.

If you’d rather throw magic around than swing a sword, Enchanter is the obvious offensive caster choice.

Go with:

Elf

And if you’re lucky enough to obtain one:

High Elf

High Elf’s increased Intelligence and Wisdom makes it naturally attractive for magic-focused characters.

Cleric is the support-oriented choice.

You’re sacrificing raw magical damage for stronger magical defense and access to healing/support abilities.

Its general profile is:

Low magic damage High magic defense Low HP Low physical defense

That means Cleric isn’t supposed to play exactly like an Enchanter just because both use magical stats.

Prioritize:

Wisdom Intelligence

Your secondary stat is:

Vitality

Cleric uses Staff Mastery and gains support/magic abilities including:

Heal Bless Holy Wounds River Wave Sacrifice Mana Shield

If you’re playing with friends and prefer keeping everyone alive rather than chasing the highest damage number, Cleric should be much more appealing.

Once again:

Elf / High Elf

High Elf’s Intelligence and Wisdom bonuses line up particularly nicely with what Cleric wants.

Choosing Milk puts you onto the Human racial path.

The listed chances are:

Human – 90% Corrupted Human – 10%

Corrupted Human is the rare variant.

The important difference is that Corrupted Human receives additional Strength and Vitality.

That’s why it’s such an appealing roll for Defender.

If you get Corrupted Human while building a tank, don’t reroll just because you were originally aiming for regular Human. You may have accidentally landed on the better option for what you’re trying to do.

Choose Meat for the Beastman path.

There are three possible Beastman variants:

The rare roll here is Beastman Fox.

Fox provides additional:

Agility Dexterity

Those bonuses are why Beastman can work nicely with Warrior.

If you’re aiming for a fast physical character that benefits from Dexterity and Agility, Fox is definitely the Beastman result I’d be happiest seeing.

Choosing the Mushroom puts you on the Elf path.

The standout rare variant here is High Elf, which has a listed 10% chance.

High Elf provides additional:

Intelligence Wisdom

That should immediately tell you which builds benefit most.

Enchanter wants Intelligence.

Cleric wants Wisdom and Intelligence.

So Elf is the natural race family for magic-focused builds, while High Elf is the roll I’d personally keep for either Enchanter or Cleric.

If you’re sitting at the opening choice and don’t want to read every class breakdown, think of it like this:

Want Warrior? Human or Beastman are sensible choices, with Beastman Fox being particularly appealing.

Want Defender? Go Human and hope for the 10% Corrupted Human roll.

Want Enchanter? Choose Mushroom for Elf and hope for High Elf.

Want Cleric? Again, choose Mushroom. Elf and especially High Elf naturally complement magical/support stats.

Don’t overcomplicate your first character, though.

A good race/class combination helps, but understanding the game’s progression systems is going to matter more than spending your first hour endlessly rerolling.

I wouldn’t.

The Portal isn’t designed like a fast Roblox RPG where the tutorial is basically five minutes of information you already know.

There’s enough going on here that new players should complete it at least once.

Your starting tutorial also changes depending on the racial route you select. For example, choosing Milk puts you onto the associated Milk tutorial path, while Meat and Mushroom lead into their respective starting routes.

More importantly, completing the tutorial gives you enough understanding to start following the main quests without blindly wandering around.

This is one of the most important warnings in the entire guide.

Your moves do NOT transfer after a Job Change.

When you change jobs, those moves are deleted rather than carried into your new job.

That’s especially important if you’ve invested time into unlocking abilities or you’re expecting your ultimate move to remain available after switching.

Don’t treat Job Change as a harmless class toggle.

Think about whether you actually want the new class before committing.

If you’re unhappy with your roll, you’ll eventually start looking for Reroll Mirrors.

You can obtain Reroll Mirrors through rewards and from the shop.

Codes can also be particularly valuable when they provide reroll-related resources.

My advice is not to waste rerolls chasing perfection unless the race you currently have genuinely works badly with the build you’re trying to make.

A 10% race sounds tempting until you’ve watched several rerolls disappear without getting it.

This is where players coming from faster Roblox RPGs may get frustrated.

There isn’t some magical early-game method that instantly makes you rich.

The Portal intentionally makes progression take time.

For early money/resources, focus on activities such as:

Gathering berries

and

Collecting metal scraps.

Keep doing your quests alongside these activities rather than stopping all progression just to grind currency.

That’s really the recurring theme of The Portal: steady progression beats trying to find shortcuts everywhere.

Some players get stuck on the early harvesting/quest progression because they rush through objectives without properly following the tutorial sequence.

If a quest asks you to harvest five of something, follow the objective properly instead of trying to skip ahead to later steps.

The Portal can be quite particular about progression order.

This is another reason I don’t recommend skipping the tutorial.

If something seems like it isn’t registering, check the exact quest objective before assuming the game is broken.

Combat Points are another system that can initially look more mysterious than they really are.

Your overall strength isn’t determined by one stat.

Combat Points are influenced by character progression systems including your:

Gear

Skill upgrades

Achievements

Codex progression

So if your Combat Points aren’t increasing as quickly as you’d like, don’t tunnel vision on character level alone.

Upgrade your equipment and skills while also working on the game’s secondary progression systems.

A character with neglected gear, achievements, and Codex progression isn’t getting everything available to them.

This is probably the tip I’d expect quite a few beginners to overlook.

Achievements aren’t only there so you can say, “Hey, I completed that.”

They can actually contribute useful stats.

For example, achievements can provide stats including:

Agility Dexterity

That means achievement hunting can directly contribute toward making your build stronger.

Open the achievement menu, read the available requirements, and start knocking out the ones that naturally fit what you’re already doing.

I wouldn’t stop all progression just to grind every achievement immediately, but ignoring the entire system is basically leaving character power on the table.

Once you’ve finished character creation, you really don’t need some complicated 30-step leveling route.

I would approach the beginning roughly like this:

• Redeem every available code before spending reroll resources.

• Decide whether you’re aiming for Warrior, Defender, Enchanter, or Cleric.

• Choose the racial path that complements that class.

• Complete the tutorial rather than skipping it.

• Follow your main quests and defeat the enemies required by them.

• Gather berries and metal scraps when you need money/resources.

• Keep upgrading your gear and skills.

• Work on your Codex as you progress.

• Check Achievements regularly for additional stat bonuses.

• Save valuable rerolls and Job Changes until you actually understand what you want from your build.

The big mistake would be spending all your early resources trying to create a perfect build before you’ve even learned how the game works.

There are a few things I’d keep in mind throughout your first several hours.

Don’t rush progression. The Portal is deliberately slower than many Roblox RPGs. If you’re expecting instant endgame access, the grind is going to feel worse than it actually is.

Match your race to your build. Corrupted Human’s Strength/Vitality fits Defender nicely, while High Elf’s Intelligence/Wisdom naturally favors Enchanter and Cleric.

Think before changing jobs. Your moves are deleted when changing jobs. Don’t find this out after investing heavily into your current abilities.

Don’t waste rerolls immediately. Rare variants such as Corrupted Human, Beastman Fox, and High Elf have low chances. Decide whether you truly need them before chasing them.

Follow quests instead of wandering aimlessly. Your main quests naturally introduce enemies and progression.

Upgrade more than your level. Gear, skills, achievements, and Codex completion all contribute toward character strength.

Complete achievements as you play. Some provide actual stats such as Agility and Dexterity.

And seriously:

Do the tutorial.

It won’t explain absolutely everything—which is why guides like this are useful—but it gives you enough of the foundation that the rest of the systems make much more sense.

According to the information shared in the guide, Xbox and PS5 support is planned for the future.

No specific release date was provided, though, so I wouldn’t put an exact console launch date on your calendar yet.

For now, console players will need to wait for further information from the developers.

Human is one of the recommended Warrior choices, while Beastman can also work well. Beastman Fox is particularly interesting because of its increased Agility and Dexterity.

Corrupted Human is an excellent Defender option because it provides additional Strength and Vitality.

Elf is recommended, with High Elf being especially useful thanks to its Intelligence and Wisdom bonuses.

Go with Elf or High Elf. Their magic-oriented stat bonuses complement the Cleric build.

Beastman Fox, with a listed 10% chance.

High Elf, with a listed 10% chance.

Because moves don’t transfer when you Job Change. Your previous moves are deleted when changing jobs.
