Scoria Reach is one of the biggest environment-focused updates Fisch has received in a while. Instead of just adding new fish and rods, this update changes how you approach an entire area. Heat management, lava fishing, mining systems, and event hunts all come together here, so jumping in unprepared usually ends badly.
This guide walks through everything that actually matters when you arrive, from survival basics to unlocking the new rods.
The New Scoria Reach Island
Scoria Reach sits between Grand Reef and Lost Jungle and is immediately recognizable because the entire island is covered in lava instead of water. That single change affects nearly everything you do here.
Normal rods and fishing habits don’t work. The lava damages you on contact, and even standing near it raises your temperature over time. If you try to explore casually without preparation, you’ll constantly burn and struggle to do anything meaningful.
The first thing most players realize is that this is not an early-game location. It’s built around mid-progression gear checks.
Surviving the Heat
Before worrying about fishing or hunting events, survival comes first.
The island revolves around a temperature system. As you move closer to the volcano, your heat meter climbs steadily. Once it reaches dangerous levels, you start taking continuous burn damage.
Inside the volcano itself, the heat is so intense that you cannot survive without Scoria Armor. No amount of healing items will compensate for the damage if you don’t have it equipped.
So the very first real objective when arriving should be heading to Ashbrook Town and buying the armor before exploring deeper areas.
Trying to skip this step is the most common mistake players make.
Lava Fishing Mechanics
Fishing here works differently from anywhere else in the game because all fishing spots are lava pools.
You can only fish in these using heat-resistant rods or rods with specific enchantments. If you bring a standard rod, it simply won’t function.
Another key change is visibility. Many fish in this region spawn only in specific hidden pools, which makes the Fish Radar extremely important. Without it, you’ll waste time fishing in the wrong spots.
This update is one of the first that really forces players to rely on radar rather than casual fishing.
Scoria Mines and Crab Cage Mining
The mining system here introduces a new mechanic called crab cage mining.
Instead of manually breaking resource nodes, you place crab cages in the mines using materials like pearls and lava clams. Once deployed, these cages automatically collect nearby ores over time.
It’s essentially a passive resource system that rewards planning rather than constant grinding.
This is important because many upgrades and crafting requirements tied to Scoria Reach depend on materials obtained through this system.
The Skeletal Leviathan Hunt Event
The biggest highlight of the update is the Skeletal Leviathan hunt.
This is a timed event that spawns inside the volcano under specific conditions, usually during nighttime or when the area becomes agitated. When active, a special orange lava fishing pool appears.
Players have about fifteen minutes to catch the Leviathan before the event disappears. Once someone successfully catches it, the hunt ends immediately for everyone.
Because of that, these hunts often become competitive races where preparation and reaction speed matter more than anything else.
New Rods Added in the Update
This update introduces two major rods tied directly to Scoria Reach progression.
One of them requires players to discover roughly half of the region’s bestiary before it becomes available. This design pushes players to explore multiple sublocations, use radar efficiently, and participate in events rather than just farming one spot.
The other rod is tied to the Valentine’s event and is limited-time, making it more of a seasonal collectible than a core progression tool.
Both rods are designed to complement lava fishing rather than replace earlier equipment.
Bestiary Progression
The Scoria Reach bestiary focuses heavily on hidden fish mechanics.
Some fish spawn only in specific sublocations, others appear only during certain conditions, and a few are tied directly to the Leviathan hunt.
Because of this, completing the bestiary here takes more effort than most other regions. It’s less about luck and more about understanding spawn patterns.
Using a Fish Radar is practically mandatory if you want to finish it efficiently.
Quick Progression Path for New Arrivals
The smoothest way to approach this update is to treat it in phases.
First, go to Ashbrook Town and buy Scoria Armor immediately. Without it, exploring the volcano is pointless.
Next, spend time in the mines setting up crab cages so you can passively farm materials.
After that, begin lava fishing while using a radar to build bestiary progress.
Only once you’re comfortable with the mechanics should you start actively chasing Skeletal Leviathan hunts.
Trying to do everything at once usually slows players down.
Scoria Reach stands out because it feels more like an environmental survival zone than a traditional fishing area. The update forces players to adapt to new mechanics, manage temperature, use radar strategically, and plan their progression carefully.
It’s not about rushing to the best rod or catching one rare fish. The real focus is learning how to operate in a dangerous environment and gradually unlocking everything the region offers.
