The Veil can feel a little confusing when you first start playing because there are a lot of things going on at once. You have quests, monsters, weapons, gems, the maze, a day and night cycle, and the sanity system to keep track of.
In this post, we will tell you how to get started in The Veil, what you should focus on during the early game, and how to make your progression easier. We will also go over combat, the maze, equipment, gems, silver, quests, and some useful tips that can save you a lot of trouble.
If you’re completely new to The Veil, don’t worry. You don’t need to understand every system immediately. I recommend taking things slowly, following the main quest, and learning the world as you go. Once you understand how everything works together, the game becomes much easier to manage.
The Veil Beginner Guide – Side Quests, Sanity System
When you first enter The Veil, I recommend following the main quest instead of immediately running around trying to explore everything.
The game has a lot of different areas and systems, so the main quest gives you a nice path to follow while you learn how everything works. You’ll naturally encounter NPCs, enemies, equipment, and other mechanics as you progress.
Your early-game routine will usually look something like this:
- Follow the main quest.
- Defeat monsters around your current area.
- Collect weapons and other useful drops.
- Complete nearby side quests.
- Explore new areas when you’re ready.
- Upgrade your equipment.
- Collect gems, silver, and other resources.
- Return to a safe area when you are running low on resources.
I found this approach much easier than trying to explore the entire map right away. There is plenty of time to explore later once your character is stronger.
Follow the Main Quest First
The main quest should be your first priority when you’re starting out.
Some of the early objectives can be as simple as defeating a certain number of monsters, but don’t ignore them. These missions are a good way to learn where enemies spawn and how combat works.
As you continue through the questline, you’ll also be introduced to different areas, NPCs, enemies, equipment, and other systems. This makes the main quest one of the easiest ways to learn The Veil without getting completely lost.
For example, if your quest asks you to defeat 30 monsters, you don’t necessarily need to search for one specific enemy. Find an area where monsters spawn regularly and work on the objective there.
You can also combine these objectives with side quests whenever possible. This saves you from having to travel back and forth across the map.
Learn the Day and Night Cycle
The day and night cycle is one of the most important things to understand in The Veil.
During the day, some areas can feel relatively quiet because monster activity is lower. Once nighttime arrives, things become much more dangerous because more monsters can appear.
This can actually be useful if you’re trying to complete a monster-related quest. If you’re struggling to find enough enemies during the day, waiting for nighttime can make farming much faster.
However, there is a downside.
Nighttime also makes it more important to watch your sanity. Spending too much time in dangerous areas can cause your sanity to drop, so you can’t simply stay outside fighting forever.
I recommend using nighttime to farm when you need it, but don’t forget that surviving the run is more important than getting a few extra kills.
Understand the Sanity System
Sanity is something you’ll want to keep an eye on, especially when exploring dangerous areas such as the maze.
Your sanity can decrease when you’re exposed to certain dangers, particularly during nighttime. If it gets too low, you can eventually die from the effect.
This means you shouldn’t treat dangerous areas as normal farming spots where you can stay indefinitely.
Before entering an area where you expect to spend a lot of time, make sure you have some Sanity Potions with you. They can be extremely useful if your sanity starts dropping faster than expected.
Here are a few things I recommend:
- Carry sanity-restoring items before entering dangerous areas.
- Keep checking your sanity while fighting.
- Leave the area if your sanity becomes dangerously low.
- Don’t waste Sanity Potions when your sanity is already high.
- Be extra careful at night.
The maze can contain some useful rewards, but there is no point getting great loot if you end up dying before you can safely finish your run.
How Combat Works
Combat in The Veil relies heavily on movement and dodging.
Instead of simply standing in front of an enemy and trying to block or parry every attack, you’ll want to move around enemies and avoid their attacks.
The early enemies are a good opportunity to practice this. Pay attention to their attack animations and learn when you need to move away.
Once you start fighting stronger enemies and bosses, this becomes even more important. If you already know how to move around attacks, you’ll have a much easier time surviving.
I also recommend not rushing into every boss you see.
Some bosses have considerably more health and damage than regular enemies. If your current weapon and equipment are weak, there’s nothing wrong with leaving the boss alone and coming back later.
Getting stronger first is usually much better than repeatedly dying while trying to force a fight you’re not ready for.
Explore the Maze Carefully
The maze is one of the most important areas in The Veil. You’ll find enemies, chests, equipment, materials, and other rewards inside, making it an important part of progression.
At the same time, the maze can be dangerous for new players.
It’s easy to get lost, especially when you’re trying to escape enemies at night. You should take your time learning the layout instead of trying to explore every corner on your first visit.
Before entering the maze, I recommend bringing:
- A reliable weapon.
- Healing items.
- Sanity Potions.
- Enough inventory space.
- Equipment suitable for your current progression.
- Extra resources for a longer trip.
You don’t have to clear the entire maze immediately. Start by learning the areas around the entrance and gradually explore deeper as your character becomes stronger.
Collect Weapons and Equipment
You’ll regularly find weapons, accessories, and other equipment while defeating enemies and exploring the world.
Whenever you defeat an enemy, take a quick look at what it dropped. You might find something that’s better than what you’re currently using.
Accessories can also be useful because some of them provide additional effects that can change how you approach certain areas or enemies.
At the same time, don’t fill your inventory with everything you find.
As you progress, you’ll collect plenty of equipment, so try to keep the items that actually improve your character and get rid of things you no longer need.
Use Gems at the Blacksmith
Gems are another important part of the equipment system.
You can take certain gems to the Blacksmith and use them to enchant your weapons. This gives you another way to improve your gear without constantly having to find a completely new weapon.
The general process is simple:
- Find a useful gem.
- Take it to the Blacksmith.
- Choose a weapon you want to improve.
- Pay the required Silver.
- Apply the enchantment.
Different gems can provide different bonuses, so I wouldn’t recommend immediately using every gem you find.
If you have a weapon that you’re planning to use for a while, it can make more sense to save your better gems for that weapon instead of spending them on something you’re about to replace.
Save Your Silver
Silver is another resource you’ll want to manage carefully.
It’s tempting to spend all your Silver as soon as you get it, especially when you find a new upgrade. However, I recommend keeping a decent amount saved whenever possible.
You’ll need Silver for things such as Blacksmith upgrades and enchantments, so spending everything on small improvements can leave you stuck when you find something more useful later.
Before spending your Silver, ask yourself whether the upgrade is actually going to make a meaningful difference.
If you already have a decent weapon, saving your currency for a better enchantment or important upgrade can be the smarter choice.
Complete Side Quests
The main quest isn’t the only thing worth doing.
You’ll find NPCs around The Veil who can offer side quests, usually marked with an exclamation mark.
These quests can involve defeating monsters in specific areas or completing other objectives. They are particularly useful when you can complete them alongside your main quest.
For example, if your main quest requires you to defeat monsters and a nearby NPC gives you another monster-related quest, take both.
That way, one trip can complete multiple objectives and give you additional rewards.
This is one of the easiest ways to make your progression more efficient without doing much extra work.
Be Careful With Bosses
Bosses can be a big step up from normal enemies.
Before starting a boss fight, take a look at your current weapon, health, healing items, and overall equipment. If the boss has significantly more health than you can comfortably deal with, you may want to come back later.
When you’re ready to fight, focus on staying alive rather than trying to deal as much damage as possible.
Watch the boss’s attack patterns, move away from dangerous attacks, and avoid standing directly in front of it for too long.
You don’t have to defeat a boss as quickly as possible. A slower fight where you survive is much better than getting greedy, taking unnecessary damage, and dying.
How to Progress Faster
The easiest way to progress efficiently is to combine different activities during the same trip.
The Veil has several systems that work well together, so you don’t need to treat every objective as a separate task.
For example, you can:
- Accept nearby side quests.
- Follow the main quest to the required area.
- Defeat monsters while completing both objectives.
- Collect useful equipment and materials.
- Open nearby chests when it is safe.
- Return to town before your sanity gets too low.
- Upgrade your strongest equipment.
- Head back out once you’re ready.
This way, you’re earning quest rewards, collecting loot, gathering materials, and improving your character without constantly traveling between the same locations.
Tips and Tricks for New Players
If you’re just starting The Veil, these are some of the things I would keep in mind:
- Follow the main quest: It gives you a clear direction and introduces the game’s systems naturally.
- Use nighttime carefully: More monsters can make farming easier, but your sanity becomes a bigger concern.
- Carry Sanity Potions: They can save a run when you’re exploring dangerous areas.
- Don’t fight every boss: Come back later if your current equipment isn’t strong enough.
- Check enemy drops: You can find useful weapons, accessories, and materials.
- Use the Blacksmith: Gems can improve your weapons through enchantments.
- Save your Silver: Keep some currency available for important upgrades.
- Complete nearby side quests: Combining them with main objectives saves time.
- Learn the maze slowly: Getting lost while your sanity is low can quickly end your run.
- Upgrade your best weapon: Don’t waste valuable resources on gear you’ll replace immediately.
- Watch the time of day: Nighttime can make familiar areas much more dangerous.
- Play with friends: Strong enemies and bosses can be easier to handle with other players.
The Veil can definitely feel overwhelming when you first start because it combines RPG progression with exploration, combat, quests, equipment, a maze, and survival-style mechanics.
However, you don’t need to understand everything immediately.
If you focus on the main quest, learn how combat movement works, collect better equipment, and pay attention to your sanity, you’ll gradually understand how the different systems fit together.
The game is best approached as an exploration RPG rather than something you need to rush through. Take your time, explore areas when you’re ready, and don’t be afraid to leave a dangerous location when things start getting out of control.
For me, the biggest beginner tip is simple: don’t rush content you’re not prepared for. Build up your equipment, keep healing and sanity items with you, complete quests efficiently, and slowly learn the maze.
Once you understand the day and night cycle, sanity system, combat, and equipment upgrades, The Veil becomes much easier to enjoy. From there, you can start exploring more dangerous areas, hunting for better loot, and taking on stronger enemies with much more confidence.
